Hello

In general there are three types of refinery configuration:
1- Skimming refinery, where the basic refinery process is crude distillation.
2- Catalytic cracking refinery, where the basic refinery process is catalytic cracking of the heavy crude cuts, in this type of refinery the (heavy to light conversion) is achieved through FCC units.
3- Thermal cracking refinery, where the basic refinery process is thermal cracking of the heavy crude cuts, in this type of refinery the (heavy to light conversion) is achieved through Coker units.

Some refineries can be totally skimming refineries with no conversion units, but catalytic and thermal cracking refineries usually are a part of combined refinery configuration (skimming + catalytic cracking) or (skimming + thermal cracking) or (skimming + catalytic + thermal cracking).
The USA refineries tend to be more towards the catalytic cracking configuration, in attempt to increase gasoline production. In Europe refineries are more towards the thermal cracking configuration to produce more diesels.
Skimming is the most basic and at the same time the most cheapest configuration and is common in Asia and Russia.

Kind regards

Alawi
