Hello friends,

Can any one help me to design a three phase separator for tretement of oil wells produced fluid?

I need some bibliographic references if possible.

Thank you very much.

Try these references:

1. "Design Two-Phase Separators within the Right Limits", W.Y. Svrcek, W.D. Monnery, CEP, October 1993. This article was followed with a letters to the editor and a correction in one of the equations but I don't have the date for that.

2. The companion article on Three-Phase Separators is, "Successfully Specify Three-Phase Separators", same authors, CEP, September 1994. Note that the correction in the one equation I mention above is corrected in this article.

3. "Design of Liquid-Liquid Gravity Separators", J. Bocangel, Chemical Engineering Magazine, February 1986

4. "How to Design Settling Drums", B. Sigales, Chemical Engineering Magazine, June 1975

Hi,

I will prepare for you an excel sheet to size either a vertical or horizontal drum , I will do it this weekend and send it to you if you want.

Hi,
I have an existing vertical tank (D=21.5 ft, H=24 ft). I want to use it to separate a mix of crudeoil + water. The flow is 750 bpd (720 bpd are water in this mix). So, there is no gas content. I try to know if the existing tank is good for the separation. Is a batch process: it takes 5 hours to put the mix in the tank and it takes 3 hours to take off the water from the tank. So, in a day, I have only 24-5-3=18 huours to get the separation.

How many hours really takes to get the separation?

Regards

Would you mind forwarding me that excel sheet also? I've been trying to size a 3-phase horizontal.

All,
Threads would be much more readable and much less lengthy is we did not arbitrarily quote all previous postings unless the quote serves a purpose.

Anyway, in answer to the OP, you need to perform a settling calculation using Stoke's Law to determine the time required to achieve phase separation. Your filling asnd emptying times get added to the settling time to determine the total cycle (batch) time; i.e. you cycle consists of fill, settle, and empty, each calculated separately. Best to use lab data if possible to get a good settling time.

Presently I am desingning a three phase separator (horizontal) with the guidance of the book: Oilfield Processing Vol. 2: Crude Oil from Manning and Thompson. My problem starts when I try to verify the relations between the Height of the Liquid (HL) with the Diameter (D) and the Height of the interfase Oil/water. The book send me a Table 6.1 that I can not find to reproduce the example of the book. Do you happen to have the relations to calculate HL and HOW and maybe the rations (HL/D) and (HOW/D) criteria?

Thank you for your time.

A three phase separator sizing princip is to have a sufficient separation time using gravity settling.
to have the required setling velocity this equation can be use

Stoke's Law (Kcr = 0.025)
Vt = (1488 g Dp2 (rl - rv))/18m
The lower limit for Stokes’ law applicability is a droplet diameter of approximately 3 microns. The upper limit is about 100 microns. low Reynolds numbers (less than 2),

Intermediate Law (Kcr = 0.334)
Vt = (3.54*g^0.71 Dp1.14 (rl - rv)^0.71)/(rv^0.29 * m^0.43)

Newton's Law (Kcr = 18.13)
Vt = 1.74 * SQRT(g Dp (rl-rv) / rv )
For relatively larger particles (approximately 1000 microns and larger), the upper limit to Reynolds
number is 200,000

(For further info, refer to GPSA Databook)

However, this is very conventional sizing calculation. and this does not considered any internal device which can icrease the separation effeciency
