Salam! me from UET, Lahore, Pakistan...i m designing vaccum distillation column for chlorophenols. Alongwith liquids.there is 0.2% dissolved hydrogenchloride, which simply strips off from the liquids & rises to top. problem is there with condenser. i want HCl as gas, at the same time chlorophenols liquify as they are condensed. please tell me how should i deal the HCl...

Salam Amna
Whether HCL can remains in the gas phase will depend on the VLE at the condenser which is depending on pressure and temperature of cooling medium available.
For HCl in liquid phase may result in corrosion problem so you may consider following options:
1. select the right materials of construction
2. Neutralize HCl with ammonia gas to form ammonium chloride. However, Ammonium chloride in the presence of water may dissociated into corrosive products - if this is so, select right material of construction.
3. Neutralize HCl in the feed with caustic NaOH. NaCl produced will be at the bottom of distillation column. Water will be collected overhead.
However, since I do not know the details of the process, I am not very sure about the effectiveness of the above options. I am applying laterally my experience in dealing with HCl in crude oil refinery.
