Eddie:

It's a pleasure to hear from someone in Ecuador. If you want a copy of my workbook, all you have to do is follow what I and Phil have indicated in the prior posts: Go to post #58 and download the copy that is offered there. It's there for you to download.

For your information and possible interest, I was the Lead Process Engineer on the design and engineering of the Eden Yuturi hot crude oil recovery plant in the Selva that I did for Oxy Petroleum in 2001. I was the designer of the hot crude oil storage tanks at the site - in fact, I designed all the tankage and process equipment. In the hot crude oil tank design you will find complete protection against thermal and mechanical effects. You will also note the use of a "Flash Boot" (bota) in order to compensate for the hot flashing crude. It was a challenging project and one that started up and produced from the very outset. It was rated for 45,000 bpd production in each of two trains. The Ecuadorian government has confiscated the facilities from Oxy last year, I believe. I would like to think they liked my design so much, that they wanted it for their own.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I am quite proud to have started this topic three years ago that now has more than 40000 views and 80 replies! ;-) Most credits are for Art and his excellent workbook of course!

Also interesting to see that those topics where you can get FREE downloads become the most popular of this forum...

Hi,

In API 2000, only flow rates (relieving rates) are given based on the tank capacity. That too in terms of air (SCFH air). Generally sizing of valves in storage tank is being carried out by vendor. Hence as our part, determining flow rate will be more than sufficient.

Does anyone know how to size a Vacuum/Relief valve on a storage tank? I looked into API Standard 2000 (appendix C), but that only says that "The size of a vent valve is based on the venting device's tank connection". API RP 520/521 only deal about Pressure Relief Valves...

Tyco has recently put it's Varec sizing program into Beta. This does what you are looking for, are at least what you were looking for back in 2004.

By year end or early 2008 the program will be in production release, which will include all of the Tyco PRV products in a single program. There is a much better installation (thank goodness for that), more features, better user interface, graph of flow curves, large unit support, etc..

The program is free... Varec Beta Download

If by chance this link has expired, you can always visit the home page at: Tyco Valve Sizing Website

QUOTE (Art Montemayor @ Mar 24 2004, 09:07 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Guys:

For my benefit, let's define what "sizing" means. I define the sizing of a vacuum/pressure relief on a storage tank as the exercise an owner's process engineer has to do to arrive at the capacity of the required tank relief devices sought. This requires, of course, that the process engineer carefully and accurately detail out all the possible, credible relief scenarios surrounding the tanks and their operation. The worst case is the relief design case.

The process engineer should also, in my opinion, decide if he will handle normal pressure relief and emergency pressure relief separately - not the instrument supplier.

The instrument supplier "sizes" (mechanically designs and rates) his instruments in accordance with the required relief capacity specified by the owner's process engineer. The owner and his process engineer are the responsible parties for the relief capacity installed on the storage tanks -- never, never the instrument supplier.

At the risk of being redundant, let me say it another way: In the USA (& in Europe) the government's regulatory agency holds the owner totally responsible for determining the correct relief capacity that will prevent an accident or incident. The owner is subject to being inspected and is held legally liable for producing up-dated and accurate calculations determining the true design case for each relief device. I believe that I am correct in all the prior statements I have made in this regard. I hope that we are in agreement on this issue, because it is a very, very important point.

I have designed and produced an Excel Workbook that leads you through the proper and documented calculations for pressure and vacuum relief of storage tanks. If anyone is interested, let me know by emailing me with your name, location and interest. I will gladly share this information with anyone that qualifies.
