My design project is based on carbon dioxide capture from a coal fired power plant. My part involves the design of a direct contact water cooler which should cool the flue gas from the power plants FGD unit from 100oC to approximately 40oC so that it can then go on to the MEA absorber. My plan was that I would sparge water from the top of the tank at 20oC. I'm having trouble in finding the required water flow rate and a suitable sparger design that will give me this temperature drop for the gas. I've looked up literature to help with the design of the tank and sparger system but can't find much information to help me. I've also looked at papers written by James R.Fair but these are quite old and and don't refer to droplet size or heat transfer in the tank.
I was wondering if anyone has come across any literature to help with the design of direct contact coolers with sparger system?
The flue gas will be entering my cooler at 100oC at a mass flowrate of 254,871kg/hr. I was assuming the the pressure in my cooler would be 1barg.
Outlet water temperature ~ 40oC.
The tank is simply a cooler and no condensation will occur within.
