Dear all,
I am a final year chemical engineering student, and i need your help/recommendation in my final year project design of a vacuum distillation column separating styrene from ethylbenzene (binary system).

My question is that i want to know what is the acceptable height of this vacuum column in practice? Is it okay to have a vacuum column of height more than 50 m ?
And finally, I want to know what operating pressure is good for this system in the feed and the condenser ? inorder to avoid full vacuum operation.

If anyone could help, please reply.

Hello Kevindave,

the operating conditions of the Ethylbenzene/styrene column are:

  • Top: 75°C and 105 mmHg
  • Bottom: 125 °C and 435 mmHg

The ethylbenzene/styrene columns are high due to the Teb of the ethylbenzene and Styrene are very close and the number of trays are more than 100.

Regards

Thanks alot jroquef for your reply and your useful data. I was just wondering what would be the pressure drop per tray in this system because as you said the number of trays are more than 100. so would you mind sending me any reference for these operating temperatures and pressure.
Thanks alot for your time.
