Mani,

At first specify the relation of your general question with "Relief Devics Forum".

mani,

'Upstream' and 'Downstream' are adverbs in the English language:

http://dictionary.re...browse/upstream

http://dictionary.re...owse/downstream

For usage of these terms in context to relief valves refer API STD 520 Sizing, Selection, and Installation of Pressure-relieving Devices in Refineries, Part 1 - Sizing and Selection

Regards,
Ankur.

In addition to previous posts, attached "explanation.doc" gives an example of upstream / downstream for clarification.
