hello everyone :)

I'm a chemical engineering student and i'm on my final project now.
its about feasibity on biodiesel plant using palm oil and this website always give good advice as i've been on here sometimes for the resources andwhen i have some questions i always find the hint or answer on here.

now i'm stuck about the time inthe settling tank when the two phases (biodiesel and glycerol) will be separated.
Can anyone guide me on this please? i really don't know how to start from.
any ideas, suggestions, or resources would be appreciate :)

thank you very much.

Jibsy,

Separation of two immiscible liquid phases with differing densities by settling or flotation is basically governed by "Stokes Law" where the terminal settling velocities for the heavier (denser) liquid determines the degree of separation. Settling tanks for liquid-liquid separation are also called as "Decanters". For discussion on the basic theory of liquid-liquid separation using "Decanters" refer the link provided below:

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Ankur.

Ankur ,
sorry for late reply i haven't been on since i didn't get reply in that couple days but still coming her and looking into things ^^"
thank you so much i will try to look more into stoke law
i was looking into the densities of both solutions but still i didn't know how to calculate the time but this time i will look more in how it works and will try to apply from that
thank you so much this help a lot and hope you don't mind if i still have some questions later on (just in case ^^")

cheers,
jibsy
