I'm using the book of Sinnot, Coulson and Richardson as a guide in designing a distillation column. In line with this,  I cannot understand how the pressure drop can be acceptable per plate in a column. I assumed a value and the total height of the weir, weir crest, residual head, dry plate pressure drop was computed. How can this total value be related to the pressure drop in the column that I assumed? Please help!

Justpop,

Try to get a copy of :"Applied process design for Chemical and Petrochemical plants from Ernest E. Ludwig", there is an example which may help you .

For better understanding take a look at the flows (liquid and gas) on a tray and you should be able to visualize all the resistances (Pressure drop) on a single tray ,by extension to all the column . Resistances are there for mass transfer purpose , contact between liquid and gas .You need to do the exercise , this is fluid dynamic applied to an equipment.

Hope this helps
