Hello everyone,

Has anybody managed to size a liquid - liquid column in hysys / pro/II?

Can anyone recommend some books or articles on how to size a liquid - liquid column ?

Thank you.

Get one. See "Distillation" - "Dist009H_Extraction"

See also "Walas, S. M. Chemical Process Equipment - Selection and Design 2005" chapter 14 "Extraction and Leaching". There's reference list for better sources.

Hi,

You can see Mass Transfer by Treybal where the liquid liquid extraction column. There is less literature available in open domain; it's very difficult to estimate the interfacial tension which itself is a critical parameter. There are two aspects to it, one is process design which probably commercial simulators may help (need proper thermo to take care of estimates) and once the loads are available, then the design of hardware i.e. an extraction column which is typically a sieve tray column. You can discuss with tray vendors if they can share some guidelines (seriously doubtful) or at least an approach to it.

Few things which you should consider while designing hardware would be,

1. Liquid flux (m3/h-m2) to ensure emulsion bands underneath of each tray and at top of tower is within limits

2. droplet diameter to see entrainment and should be assessed in conjunction with hole velocity

3. Residence time of settling & rising of phases

hope it helps.

But be careful using Treybal. You don't need downcomer restriction as he says.

You can also look for the tutorials provided by hysys/Pro-II/Petrosim
