Dear Team,

We are reviewing Plate type heat exchanger design from some vendor, the exchanger is basically lean/rich amine exchanger for amine plant. we come across that the vendor has used exchanger nozzle of 3-inch for 6-inch inlet pipe size. so far unable to find criteria for this reduce nozzle size. One side fluid parameters are as under.

Flow : 278 usgpm  (Hot Lean Amine)

Density : 62.28 lb/ft3(Hot Lean Amine)

viscosity: 0.57 cp (Hot Lean Amine)

Flow : 269 usgpm  (Cold Lean Amine)

Density : 60 lb/ft3(Cold Lean Amine)

viscosity: 1.2 cp (Cold Lean Amine)

It would be helpful if any of you can suggest better way out to understand this.

Ask the vendor.

My two cents:

1) Does the pressure drop in the exchanger meet the drop specified in the datasheet.

2) Does the velocity in the piping and nozzle meet the velocity limits based on material of construction specified for rich/lean amines

If the answer to both these questions is yes, you should not worry
