Harddisk:

Why are you so LAZY? You are giving ChE students a bad name.

All I did was key in telemetry into the Google database and the first hit was the answer:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCADA

Even though you are lazy, you bring up an important subject in process control and operations. Telemetry is the practice of sending signals over long distance for the sake of remotely monitoring or controlling a process - such as is the case of remote located gas/oil wellheads that need to be controlled by a central Operations Center. One or a few operators can manage/control a multiplicity of gas/oil wells with telemetry.

The term SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) usually refers to a central system that monitors and controls a complete site or a system spread out over a long distance (kilometres/miles).

Telemetry is the transmission of those signals between the source and the Control Center. This is an important subject that should be studied by ChE - especially those entering production/operations. The expertise on how/when to transmit and receive useful process signals will be of vital use in the future for many ChEs.
