Hello,
I have to design an SO2 absorber using a reaction with IO3-. How can I do it?? I've been reading literature but it seems that is too complicated, since I need details of the chemical reaction. I have an industrial instalation and I'm thinking on doing some experiments. Do you know someones that could help me?
Any tips, please..
Thanks and email me at antosan@vtr.net

hi,
iam also designing a absorber(caustic scrubber) for the removal of SO2 with the help of NaOH(dilute).u should use this reagent of that which u r using.its data is easily available

Not having practical experience on the specific subject, I consider useful to study "Gas Purification" by A Kohl and F Riesenfeld (several editions by probably several publishers, 2nd edition is by Gulf Publishing Co, 1974), Chapter " Sulfur Dioxide Removal" . No utilization of pure aqueous NaOH was found (but data using NH3, Ca(OH)2, alkaline salts is available), yet useful info can be traced for the case required.
Note: Oxidizing SO2 through IO3- (post No 1) is a different case ( http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100121182247AAJpGhb). I remember Srieve (Chemical Process Industries) indicating treatment of sulfuric acid unit flue gases (downstream absorption) by washing with KMnO4 solution. This must occur in liquid phase, absorption of SO3 by water looks practically impossible (Walker, Lewis, McAdams, Gilliland, Principles of Chemical Engineering, 3rd ed, ~ 1938).
For further dealing with the subject of SO2 scrubbing, please start a new thread. The present one is too old.

Note: Look also at http://www.cheresources.com/invision/topic/15476-removal-of-so2-from-flue-gases-using-caustic-scrubber/.
