Dear Group members,
In one of the project we have provided a tank for xylene (hydrocarbon) storage with nitrogen blanketing to avoid safety hazard. But Client is asking that is there any statutory requirement for nitrogen inside the tank? If so, then please mention the code/authority/board mentioning the same. Is it mandatory? Actually I have not come across any such code. Please help me.

Simadri:

Is your project in India? If so, then perhaps some Indian Forum members can offer advice. Here in the USA there is no “statutory requirement for nitrogen inside the tank” – other than good engineering judgment. For example, it is assumed you will employ essentially pure nitrogen (and not a flue gas) – which is approx. 99 % vol. Purity.

I would consult with local authorities or your insurance company.

Dear Art,
Thank you for your reply. Yes, the project is in India. I think there must be some statutory requirement for nitrogen or any other inert gas inside the tank, wherever applicable.
