I posted this over at Eng-Tips, but didn't get any bites yet, so I thought I would give it to you guys to chew on.
The NBBI Rules and Recommendations for the Design and Construction of Boiler Blowoff Systems (1991) shows an orifice in the discharge line from a blowoff tank and gives criteria for calculating the orifice size. However, the purpose of the orifice is never discussed. Can anyone explain the purpose of this orifice? I don't like folowong code calculations by rote without understanding the engineering philosophy behind them.
Thanks,
Mike

Are you talking about the continuous (or semi-continuous) blowdown from the top skimmer of the boiler?
I ran into this same confusion. I think that it is a cook-book method for generating a specific amount of flash steam at a given pressure. If you are not recovering the flash steam I don't think that it matters. But if you want to recover a specific pressure flash steam thats when I think that orifice sizing becomes an issue.
I might be wrong, but that is my best guess after pondering it a while when I had the same question.
Note: If you are installing a continuous blowdown controller, be sure to install it strictly by the manufacturers recommendations. The sonductivity probes can be mighty picky.
