A falling film evaporator is a type of industrial evaporator used to separate a liquid mixture into its components by evaporation. The name "falling film" refers to the way the liquid is introduced into the evaporator as a thin film or layer, which flows down the heated surface of the evaporator.
The falling film evaporator typically consists of a vertical shell-and-tube heat exchanger, with the liquid mixture flowing down the inside of the tubes in a thin film, while steam or some other heating medium is passed through the tubes on the outside. The heat from the heating medium causes the liquid to boil and evaporate, leaving behind the desired component(s) as a concentrated product.
The advantages of the falling film evaporator include its high heat transfer coefficient, which allows for rapid evaporation and a high concentration of the desired product, as well as its ability to handle heat-sensitive materials with minimal product degradation. It is commonly used in the food, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries, among others.
