Jiggy,

I had written a "Drain System" standard for a middle east O&G company. For onshore O&G installations the following is the criteria for sizing of the open drain system:

Open drain system design

Design flows:

The loading on a open drainage system mainly consists of:

Rainwater (Qr) flow rate

Fire-fighting water (Qf) flow rate

Washdown water (Qw) flow rate

Open Drain systems shall be designed for the greatest of the following three flows:

Firewater case = Qf

Rainwater case = Qr

Washdown case = Qw

Hope this helps

Regards,
Ankur.
