Hi,

Currently in one of our project we have a slug control valve (SCV) in the bypass line of the inlet control valve of the separator. As per the Bid P&ID, the inlet control valve size is 18" and the SCV size is 6".

As there is no slug volume is available, a query has been raised to client for specifying slug volume.

The response from client was, it will be determined using dynamic simulation.

However I believe that Slug volume to be specified by client or can be determined by OLGA software. It can not be done by Hysys dynamics.

The current specifications for inlet separator sizing are:

Surge factor : 25% of the maximum well fluid

Swell factor : 15 % Minimum on Condensate

I have 3 questions in this regard.

1. What shall be sizing criteria (flow rate) for the SCV?

2. Whether additional slug volume to be considered for separator sizing, even if the surge factor and swell factors already considered in the inlet flow rate?

3. Can we calculate the slug volume from hysys dynamics?

Kindly give some suggestion.

Regards,

Balakrushna

  • Explain why client want by pass valve for slug control?
  • Do you think, the flow in production line is stratified and enough time is there to separate gas, oil & slug?
  • Ask client for slug volume, if client is not able to provide you then take 10% approximation or consult Shell DEP.
  • I don't have experience with OLGA for slug determination, may be some one forum member can explain it further.
  • Why you are differentiate surge & swell factor, elaborate it more for good comments.
